Battery storage is the addition of a lithium-iron-phosphate or lithium-nickel-manganese-cobalt battery to a residential or commercial solar system (or as a standalone backup) so that energy generated during the day can be used at night, during a grid outage, or to arbitrage time-of-use rates. The 147 storage specialists on this page are certified on Tesla Powerwall 3, Enphase IQ Battery 5P, Franklin aPower 2, FranklinWH, SolarEdge Home Battery, and other major platforms, with hands-on experience wiring whole-home backup, partial-load critical-circuit subpanels, and Virtual Power Plant integrations. Most offer retrofit installs for existing solar arrays as well as new solar-plus-storage projects.
Average installed cost in 2026. A typical 10–13 kWh home battery installs for $10,000–$16,000 in 2026, including the battery itself, gateway, transfer switch, electrical work, and commissioning. A stacked two-unit system reaches $18,000–$28,000. Whole-home backup with a 30–40 kWh stack and oversized solar runs $35,000–$60,000. The federal Section 25D residential solar tax credit expired December 31, 2025, so direct-purchase residential storage no longer captures the 30% federal credit. Third-party-owned leases and PPAs can still capture the commercial 48E credit through the system owner. State and utility incentives remain strong — California SGIP, Massachusetts ConnectedSolutions, New York Energy Storage Rewards in Con Ed territory, and several Virtual Power Plant programs continue to pay homeowners through 2026.
Credentials and certifications that matter. Require manufacturer-factory training on the specific battery platform you are installing (Tesla, Enphase, Franklin, SolarEdge), a current state electrical contractor license, $1M+ general liability and workers' compensation insurance, and documented experience with at least 10 prior installs on the same platform. NABCEP PV Installation Professional certification on at least one crew member is the industry baseline. For Virtual Power Plant enrollments, the installer should be an approved aggregator partner with the program operator.
Red flags to watch for. Installers who quote a battery without explaining backup loads, transfer-switch configuration, or expected runtime; companies that bundle a battery into a financing package with hidden dealer fees above 20% of the cash price; vague warranty terms that don't specify capacity retention at end of warranty (60–70% is typical); and any pitch that promises continuous off-grid operation from a single 10 kWh battery for a typical American home. Ask for a clear runtime model based on your essential loads.
How our vetting process works for storage specialists. Storage contractors badged on Top Solar Services have been verified for license status, insurance, manufacturer training on the platforms they install, and a sample of recent customer references with verified commissioning quality and post-install support reports. Verification refreshes annually.
